Biography

Yohan Nieto (1994) is a photographer who’s work explores contemporary social, political, and cultural issues in the West, within the context of the acceleration and exponential alienation of late capitalism, its drift toward fascism, and the resulting civil resistance. Inspired by the new documentary approaches theorized by Laia Abril and Max Pinckers starting in 2017 and further elaborated in the book When Fact is Fiction: Documentary Art in the Post-Truth Era (2019), my work revolves around theatricality, performativity, and collaboration within the documentary genre. Moving between photography, text, and archives, my artistic practice addresses themes related to history and politics, past and present, facts and fiction. My ongoing series, Down the Garden Path, explores the historical memory of Francoism in Galicia through vernacular narratives of repression and the documentation of its contemporary influence on the region and its population.
