Fortress of Lies (2023-ongoing)

Fortress of Lies is an ongoing photographic series exploring the memory of my homeland, Galicia,
an autonomous community in Spain.

The project specifically focuses on the influence of Francoist memory on the territory and population of Galicia.
At the start of the civil war in 1936, Galicia, the birthplace of the future dictator Francisco Franco, immediately fell into the hands of the insurgent forces. Nevertheless, the repression was brutal, with the establishment of a dozen concentration camps for political and ideological enemies, the assassination of 4,500 people buried in more than 400 mass graves across the Galician territory. After Franco’s death in 1975 and more than 40 years of dictatorship, Spain transitioned to democracy, but Francoist sympathizers continued to infiltrate the political, judicial, and military spheres.

With Fortress of Lies I seek to explore the Francoist memory that persists and manifests today in Spanish society through what is known as Sociological Francoism.
