Fortress of Lies (2023-ongoing)
Fortress of Lies is an ongoing photographic series exploring the memory of my homeland, Galicia, and more specifically the influence of Francoism on its territory and its people. The title refers to my attempt to expose to the light of day what is normally hidden in the details of contemporary Galicia, but also to unveil what its past conceals from us, thus revealing the invisible link that connects these two eras.
At the start of the civil war in 1936, Galicia, the birthplace of the future dictator Francisco Franco, immediately fell into the hands of the insurgent forces. Nevertheless, the repression was brutal, with the establishment of a dozen concentration camps for political and ideological enemies, the assassination of 4,500 people buried in more than 400 mass graves across the Galician territory. After Franco’s death in 1975 and more than 40 years of dictatorship, Spain transitioned to democracy, but Francoist sympathizers continued to infiltrate the political, judicial, and military spheres.
With Fortress of Lies, I seek to explore this collective memory that is gradually disappearing with the passing of the men and women who lived through the regime, but also how it manifests today in contemporary Galician society.

Fortress of Lies es una serie fotográfica en curso que explora la memoria de mi tierra natal, Galicia, y más específicamente la influencia del franquismo en su territorio y su gente. El título se refiere a mi intento de sacar a la luz lo que normalmente está disimulado en los detalles de la Galicia contemporánea, pero también de desvelar lo que su pasado nos oculta, revelando así el vínculo invisible que conecta estas dos épocas.
Al inicio de la guerra civil en 1936, Galicia, origen del futuro dictador Francisco Franco, cayó inmediatamente en manos de las fuerzas rebeldes. No obstante, la represión fue brutal, con el establecimiento de una docena de campos de concentración para enemigos políticos e ideológicos, el asesinato de 4.500 personas enterradas en más de 400 fosas comunes a lo largo del territorio gallego. Tras la muerte de Franco en 1975 y más de 40 años de dictadura, España transitó hacia la democracia, pero los simpatizantes franquistas continuaron infiltrándose en las esferas política, judicial y militar.
Con Fortress of Lies, busco explorar esta memoria colectiva que está desapareciendo gradualmente con el paso de los hombres y mujeres que vivieron el régimen, pero también cómo se manifiesta hoy en la sociedad gallega contemporánea.
