In These Dark Times (2022)

Waiting at the border, from the series In These Dark Times, 2022

In These Dark Times is a documentary project born out of the necessity to respond to the horror of the news surrounding the Russian invasion of Ukraine on March 8, 2022. Led in collaboration with Marie-Lou Dumauthioz, a Swiss photographer, we organized a trip to Ukraine and the Polish border to document the consequences of the war on the fleeing population.

At the Polish border, we encountered a place where life appeared to be suspended, and where all activity was focused on organizing emergency reception for displaced populations. Places had undergone a transformation: the shopping center, the border post, and the train station, once transit areas, had become places where people lived and slept. What struck us was the absence of privacy, as everything previously confined to the private sphere was now lived out in public view, mixed together and condensed.

In These Dark Times
documents the initial month of the conflict, with a focus on humanitarian aid for refugees between Przemyśl and Lviv. It serves as a revelation for both photographers, highlighting the necessity of using their medium to question the political crisis in the West and its consequences.
